A musical is like a breath of fresh air. For me, it's an outlet for a voice that's been away in hiding... I've always loved musicals, My Fair Lady and Sound of Music are movies that make me want to sit up, and sing! Sister Act (I and II) was fun too!
We had heard a lot about Mamma Mia, but somehow we kept missing it at the theatre... Until finally my mom and I decided that today was it. We were just going to see it! And we did!
To begin with we saw the movie at Gem which is just a tiny theatre with a capacity of 40 people. It was a late night Saturday show. Most people knew the songs of abba even before they walked in.
The movie begins and there’s this cheerful girl who starts singing honey, honey and suddenly we realized that we are not the only ones humming the song. In fact people are singing the songs!
The lyrics were being displayed on the screen and so we all started singing along with the movie and it turned out to be a sing-along mamma mia! Just like that! Without any planning, just spontaneous emotions at play!
What a joy ride it was, the actual act of singing each song out loud in tune with the 40 other people made it the most amazing movie experience ever!
The movie plot was fairly simple, the script was excellently written in parts and at other it was fairly good. The beauty was in the fact that the script had been written bearing in the mind the songs that were to be used, so the movie flowed and the songs seemed as though they were custom made for those very scenes when it must’ve been the other way around!
Merryl Streep has delivered a stunning performance especially in the way she emotes her songs and her dances. It’s amazing to see that kind of agility in a woman her age! Amanda, her friends and the others have done well but not spectacular. There was this one song in the movie which I had never heard before and I thoroughly enjoyed the picturisation, “Does your mother know” Such a perfect setting for a song and beautiful choreography! Pierce Brosnan has done alright. I would’ve expected something more from him though… Colin Firth has put on a lot of weight since I last saw him in a movie, (which was Bridget Jones incidentally) but he’s alright, nothing striking.
All in all, apart from Merryl Streep, the performances of the others are average. She is excellent!
The songs are the USP for the movie, and trust me, if you enjoy Abba songs, you will love the movie! It’s not a Oscar winning movie, but it’s a movie you want to own, watch and sing.
